Service, good or bad, will always sell!

I recently was in LaCrosse, WI for business and I stopped for lunch downtown on Pearl Street. I had my son with me who has recently returned from Alaska where he earned his Masters degree in Music Performance. As soon as we walked in the door, I noticed there were 7 employees behind the counter waiting to serve us. I believe everyone of them acknowledged us and welcomed us for lunch. The young lady at the register took our order with a smile and seemed as though she really enjoyed what she was doing. at the other end of the counter, the gentleman who presented us with our order, confirmed our selection by telling us what it was as he gave it to us. We sat towards the back of the store and as I was eating I observed the employees and their actions. Every single one of them kept doing something between customers, never just standing there looking bored. As other customers came in to the store I noticed every one of the employees greeted them with the same excitement they had greeted us with. Even the employee that was in the back of the service area across from where I was sitting said “Welcome and thanks for coming in today.” What was different, was that there was no way that the people who walked in could hear that gentleman say that to them but it was obvious to me that it was a standard of excllence in customer service that was ingrained into every employee through their training.

Why would I choose to go there again? Because of a simple but effective action called service. Service sells because people want to know they matter and that the space they take up has a value. If you are going to give someone your earned money in exchange for a product or service, you want it to have a value to you, it needs to matter.

Two things…

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ray @ 8:34 pm

I want to share two things with all of you in this blog. First, I am no longer doing a newsletter as a seperate entity from my blog. It was quite redundant and I figure I can accomplish the same thing through the blog which is going to be much more consisitent moving forward.

Secondly, I want to share a story with you that happened to a friend of mine recently. My friend drives a garbage truck and provides a much needed service to all he serves. He has a particular route on Fridays that he really does not like at all as it is a long route and he does not have another person with him when he does this particular route. So, he drives the truck for a few feet then has to jump out and go back and forth across the street hundreds of times a day picking up the garbage from the residents of this community and disposing of it into his truck. Well, he is a person that whether he likes what he is doing or not, will give 100% in all that he does. So he does not stroll back and forth across the street, he quickly walks/jogs back and forth so he can get the job done in a timely fashion while providing great service to the customer.

Last Friday, he was doing this route and he noticed this vehicle seemed to be “stalking” him as he drove from one part of his route to another. He was starting to get a bit concerned as to who this would be when as he stopped, the vehicle pulled up behind him and an elderly gentleman exited the vehicle. He approcached my friend and asked if he was the driver that serviced his block on the other end of town? My friend said yes, and the gentleman said he was trying to catch up to him all day as he wanted to give him something. The elderly gentleman pulled out a $10 bill and wanted to give it to my friend as a tip for doing such a quality job of taking care of his garbage. My friend responded by saying he could not accept it as he was just doing his job. Again, the gentleman handed the money towards him and said he had been watching him for a few weeks and he was impressed with how my friend takes his job seriously and does his job professionally.

There are several reasons I share this with you. First, there are a lot of things in life that we may not like or want to do, but that does not mean you should not do them to the best of your ability.

Another reason is that even if you don’t realize it, people notice hard work and appreciate hard work.

Most importantly, you have to live with you for the rest of your life, so do the things that you believe will set you up for success on purpose because it is never an accident.

Note: My friend told me it makes it easier to do the route he does not like to do when someone appreciates it.

Attitude and kindness are very powerful!

Win the day……..

The CEO of your life

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ray @ 8:02 am

ALthough I try to distance myself from the news media on a daily basis due to the constant pumping of negative news and energy, it is impossible to not understand that much of the world is experiencing crisis at previously unseen levels. With leaders throughout the world under the microscope, I suggest that you should take a real hard look at the leader in your company called life, and that leader is you! Yes, you are the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) in your life. How is your company doing? Is it where you think it should be at this point in your life? Are you growing in the right direction? Are you falling behind?

As you see in many countries throughout the world, there is a real discontent with “Busines as usual” and complacency. It appears as though people are not content to be kept from maximizing their potentials.

Are you maximizing your potentials or are you content to believe that good enough is good enough? Do you believe that since “it has always been this way” you should just give up your dreams and do what you have always done because you have always done it?

Since you are 100% responsible for your company (You) and it’s future, might I suggest to you that you stay focused on two visions everyday. First, where is my company right now? Secondly, if it is not yet where it should be, what needs to be done to get it there?

At times of crisis or conflict, it is those that have a goal and a STRATEGY in place to achieve that goal who usually end up exactly where they have decided to be; on purpose!

Just a little food for thought, hope your hungry.

Win the day

A good cleansing…

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ray @ 3:29 pm

As I sit here in Southwest Wisconsin looking out my window as the snow is falling in really big flakes, I am reminded of what is occuring as it snows. The snow, just like rain, cleanses the air and brings in a fresh new perspective to the day. Whether you like the snow or not, it is natures way of washing the air we breathe.

I think it is wise for all of us to look at our lives, days, hours and even minutes as a cleansing to our spirits, energies, and actions. As each minute passes, it is gone and there is no need to hold on to it whether it has been a good one or a bad one, it is simply over. Yes, we should learn from it, grow from it, change or enhance our actions and energies as a result; hopefully becoming better human beings.

We should look at each minute as a new opportunity to cleanse and start fresh into the next thought and action. Most of us are so fortunate to have the things we have created with our words, thoughts and actions.

I am going to change and get ready to teach my martial arts class now and I am focusing on the cleansing effect of each monent as it passes while working with, and learning from the students as they work through the class with great intent and passion.

It’s Great to Be You! maximize your potential……..always.

You are not alone……..

You are not alone…..

You may have heard many different versions such as highs and lows, ups and downs, or even peaks and valleys, but they are all code words for life. We all go through them. You know, when you are in a valley it seems like the world is caving in on you, and nothing seems to be working for you? It seems hard to keep up with all your responsibilities and you start to wonder if what you are pursuing is worth it or not.

So, what do you do? First, understand that it is normal and going to happen, so there is no need to go into panic mode.

What you need to do is reinforce your focus on the goals you have set and re-commit yourself to achieving them.

It is easy to attend night classes, handle the work load, and keep up with your hectic schedule when your on a high or peak, however, true leaders figure out a way to do it during those low or valley times.

It really comes down to your commitment to your greatest asset…….YOU. When you set goals for yourself, be sure to build into your strategy how you plan to deal with those times when the lows or valleys appear because they will. When you do this, you are setting yourself up for success on purpose by being prepared and reinforcing your commitments, and accepting nothing less than what is best for you and your goals over the long term.

Keep you eye on the big picture of your life and you will likely end up exactly where you have worked to be.

I wish you a very happy holiday season and look forward to hearing about your successes………….

It’s great to be you!

So, whatcha gonna do?

It appears as though 2010 is not going to be the year of the big economic turn around. While certain areas of the economy are showing improvement, there is not a wholesale recovery in the near future. So, what are you going to do about that? Are you going to hop on the wagon by the water cooler and complain about the weather, your boss, the rules, and every other area of your life that you have no control over? Or, are you going to focus on the areas of your life that you do control such as your attitude, your energy, your passions and your goals?

I know one thing for sure; all the complaining in the world will not change a thing. You need to make the commitment to yourself and become passionate about your goals. What you give your time and energy to will grow flourish and prosper in your life. What you deny your time and energy, will wither, die and leave your life.

Control what you can control, and use the power of YOU to be who you deserve to be and where you deserve to be on purpose! I was asked awhile back how 2010 was treating me; the appropriate question should be, how am I treating 2010? How are you treating 2010?

So, whatcha gonna do???

On the road again………..

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ray @ 8:05 pm

Last weekend I did a three day book signing for my book, “It’s Great to Be YOU”at Rural Route #1 Popcorn in Montfort Wisconsin. It was a great three days as it was their “fall harvest” weekend and the place was packed all three days. I met and sold books to people from South Carolina, Iowa, Illinois, and as far away as Alaska!

I love to listen to people and hear their stories. No matter what state you are from, many of the stories are universal in theme. We all have ups and downs, highs and lows, and middle of the road days.

I believe that the key to reacting to any given day is to find at least one good thing in it before the day is done. It really is about what you want to focus on.

I went into the three day weekend with the goal of selling each day, at least one more book than the day before. I reached, and exceeded my goal each day, but not without a little extra effort. On day two, I had to stay an extra hour to reach my goal.

Many times, it is a matter of attitude and willingness to do what it takes to reach your goals. With a down economy, jobless rates rising, as well as everyday issues that need to be dealt with, you must stay focused on the result you want and you will end up where you want to be more often than not.

Talk soon…….

School is in session!!!

Well, school has started and we are entering a new season. Each year, I express to my martial arts students that the beginning of school represents a fresh start.  The same is true for those of us in the working world. As you enter the final quarter of the year, are you setting short term goals for the next three months, or at least evaluating your existing goals as to where you are compared to where you want to be?

Excellence, success, and happiness never takes a vacation. Where is it that you are working to be on purpose? Just a little food for thought, I hope your hungry!

Create a great day for yourself….

Busy Busy Busy

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ray @ 10:34 pm

It has been a month and 2 days since my last blog. I have been busy in many areas over the past month. I have been doing speaking engagements, promoting my new book, running my martial arts school, and getting my son off to college. He is pursuing his masters degree in music performance. While I am truly happy for him, the fact that he is pursuing this degree at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, will be a bit harder than going to UW-Whitewater (2 hours away) to go and watch his performances. He just drove 4,500 miles on his motorcycle (1997 BMW R1100RT) to get there. He says it was beautiful even though he rode much of the trip in the rain. He was in awe of the natural beauty of this country as well as Canada and Alaska.

When you are 23 years old and going to college, you have a couple very precious gifts at the same time that will rarely happen at the same time as you get older. These gifts are, time and individual freedom. After college (and during school) you will possibly have a job, relationship, and other situations where others have their hands on your time.

It is important to consider taking advantage of opportunities in your life as they come your way, even if it is outside your comfort zone- healthy risks if you will.  All decisions you make and don’t make, have a value to you so enjoy the process…..

No matter your lot in life, you are your greatest asset so always remember, it is great to be you!

Talk again soon………
